Shying

I had a theory that many shys were the horse's attempts (generally successful) to redirect the rider's attention to looking out for threats to their mutual self-preservation. Over time, this theory has become a belief. It has been substantiated by my riding pardner's antics - though she rides an Egyptian, I feel that has nothing to do with the dynamics:

Judy likes to talk and she isn't satisfied by an occasional "Yup, I agree" shouted up to her ... she leads, I follow. At quiet spots she cranks her head around to ensure I am enthusiastically nodding assent, presenting the appropriate facial expressions (shock, outrage, confusion etc). You see, it ain't enough that I hear and understand ... I must *feel*, too!

Just as my facial muscles are starting to spasm from this unaccustomed intensity, Dear Old Joe darts six feet sideways with outstretched neck and pointed head at some log or stone ... earning him a kick in the slats and me a brief respite!! I love that horse<sigh>

Have Fun!
